Combining system resources in a college success course – A simplified eLearning design that integrates Google@UH apps and the Laulima LMS

Session Description
Navigating the typical services used to deliver online courses in the UH system can be daunting. The services, Google@UH suite, and the Laulima (Sakai) Learning Management System (LMS), each require a separate entry point which can result in a series of go here-go there actions during the course of learning. By incorporating the use of these services into the course design and creating a consolidated entry point with Laulima as the landing/launchpad; ease of navigation, efficiency, and user perception of the e-learning experience may be greatly enhanced.

Hawaii Community College course, IS101, “Building Bridges to Self, College, and the Community”, has been chosen for the development of an e-learning course that integrates the use of these UH services in a simplified user-centered design guided by mobile and intuitive design principles, while also considering “anywhere, anytime” access from an array of devices and platforms for both the learner and the facilitator. The design includes embedded tech skill development using Google apps, the Google+ Social Media platform for asynchronous class discussion, and sequencing and scheduling aids to promote student success.
