Using YouTube to Teach Media Literacy in the Online Course

Session Description
The importance of media literacy has been recognized by national organizations such as NAMLE (National Association for Media Literacy Education) and by international organizations such as UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Media literacy involves development of competencies in accessing, analyzing, evaluating, using, and creating media messages. YouTube is now over a decade old and has more than a billion users per month who view or create videos shared in the public online social-media space. The role of YouTube for development of media literacy skills has been previously suggested (Bloom & Johnston, 2010), but has not been deeply explored through an intensive full-semester curriculum.
